Yarygin in 1973 and manufactured at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, the prototypes were tested by the state in 1976 and made official for Soviet teams in 1979, replacing the previous XP-30 and XP-31 Soviet standard sport pistols.
In 2008, the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant renamed the IZH-35 as the MP-35M (Mechanical Plant-35M).
