Product Description

Now is your chance to get your hands on a beautiful example of real American history. The M.T. Wickham Model 1816 Type III New Jersey Sussex Brigade Flintlock Musket, is up for auction, just as the founding Fathers intended!

This hard-to-find, exceptional Model 1816 musket, crafted by the renowned Marine T. "M.T." Wickham and linked to the New Jersey Sussex Brigade, stands as a beacon of American military heritage. Manufactured between 1816 and 1824, this flintlock musket is not only a real piece of history but also a collector's prized possession. The .69 BPM caliber and side-lock flintlock action reflect the ingenuous design and technology of early 18th & 19th-century American firearms.

The musket remains in good/very good condition considering its age and the rigors of historical use. It features its original dark walnut wood Enfield-style stock adorned with an iron buttplate and barrel bands, which have developed a rich, dark patina over time. The brass and iron metal components complement the wood with their own aged patina, adding character and authenticity. The wood stock has minor dents and dings, these elements only enhance its historical value as it added to the allure of its mysterious past. Included in the sale is the original matching "U.S."-marked bayonet, which is a rarity in itself.

It is worth noting, the lug on the bayonet is slightly warped and it cannot be fitted to the barrel. However, our gunsmiths believe it is salvageable if the repair can be done delicately.

This Model 1816 musket is steeped in history. M.T. Wickham, a significant gunsmith at Harpers Ferry, joined before 1816, made substantial contributions to American military armaments. This particular musket, marked with "M.T. WICKHAM PHILA" and "S.N.J." for Sussex County New Jersey, was part of a batch delivered to the local Sussex Brigade armory – a unit dating back to 1768 and crucial during several American conflicts.

The deep markings of "SUSSEX BRIGADE" on the stock and the proof marks on the barrel underline its authenticity and rarity. The rarity of this rifle is no joke, as there were only roughly 16,600 made in total - including the "SNJ" marked M1816's.

Owning this musket connects you to the era where militias were the backbone of American military might, since they didn't trust an official "Army" - how American of them! Reflecting a period of profound national growth and identity, this rifle is perfect for historians, collectors, or reenactors, this musket offers more than just ownership; it offers an experience and a piece of history that continues to tell its story.

This M.T. Wickham Model 1816 musket is not just an artifact; it's a tangible gateway to the past, offering a unique story and an invaluable piece of military heritage. Whether for display, collection, or use, this musket promises to be a holy grail centerpiece of any collection. Embrace the opportunity to own a rare piece of American history today.
