This Tula M91 Finnish Capture rifle is a historic gem, blending Russian craftsmanship with Finnish precision. Manufactured in 1896, this bolt-action rifle in 7.62x54R caliber is not just a piece of history but a testament to the rugged reliability of early military firearms. With its 1st Pattern Tula Imperial M91 engravings, this weapon is an icon for collectors and history enthusiasts alike, offering a tangible connection to the past. Owning this rifle means possessing a finely aged, meticulously crafted, battle-tested firearm that has stood the test of time, perfect for both display and historical appreciation.
In very good condition for its age, this Tula M91, converted to an M24 configuration, shows only light, superficial signs of prior handling or use. The Finnish 2-piece stock is in great shape, with minimal dings and dents, and the metal surfaces have developed a beautiful blued/bare metal patina. Despite its age and unrefurbished status, the bore is bright, with excellent rifling and only mild fouling on the walls. The rifle’s action is still smooth and buttery, and it features a 5-round internal magazine and a 31.5" barrel.
Included in the sale is an antique leather Mosin dual ammo pouch, adding to the rifle's historical value. The rifle's Finnish two-piece stock is detailed with copper rivets, Russian escutcheons, Finnish hangers, and late 4th-pattern M91 barrel bands. The sights include an adjustable rear leaf Konovalov with Finnish metric graduations and a front adjustable dovetail "barleycorn" blade.
This unique unrefurbished M91 was originally manufactured by the Tula Arsenal in Russia and later reconfigured into an M24 by a Finnish arsenal, likely during the early-mid 1920s. Remarkably, it lacks any Finnish proof mark or acceptance stamp, making this M24 exceptionally unique. All proof marks remain visible despite the patina, and the receiver tang date matches the barrel date, confirming it has not been rebarreled and retains its original barrel.
The Tula M91/M24 Finnish Capture rifle is not just a collectible; it is a piece of living history. It represents the tumultuous history between Russia and Finland, having likely seen action during the Winter War and Continuation War. This rifle deserves to be cherished by collectors and preserved in its current condition. Please, save your plans for bubba-ing a Mosin for a round receiver. Keep this beauty in it's original form, it deserves it!
