The PSL-54C is a Romanian designated marksman rifle (DMR) manufactured by Romarm at the Cugir factory. Introduced as a cost-effective alternative to the Soviet Dragunov SVD, the PSL-54C started production in the late 1970s. Chambered in the powerful 7.62x54R cartridge, it features a 10-round detachable magazine and a black finish. The model manufactured in 2001 continues to embody the versatility and reliability prized by Eastern Bloc forces. It comes equipped with a BelOMO POSP 4x24mm illuminated optic, featuring the PSO-1 reticle with a stadiometric rangefinder, enhancing its utility in medium to long-range engagements.
Romania's version of the SVD was developed due to strained relations with Russia, which refused to license the SVD Dragunov to them. Instead, Romania essentially scaled up an RPK to accept 7.62x54R rounds. Despite popular opinion, the PSL is not related to the SVD Dragunov; they are completely different rifles. The PSL-54C is recommended for sub-180 grain bullets, as higher grain bullets will damage the rifle.
