Ruger 77/17RM Standard Sporter .17 HMR – Scarce Walnut-Blued Bolt-Action Rimfire
Ruger’s 77/17RM marries the company’s classic Model 77 action with the sizzling .17 HMR cartridge, delivering center-fire feel in a rimfire package. This 2012 example is the desirable Standard Sporter variant: blued chrome-moly steel, finely cut walnut, and a crisp 22" hammer-forged barrel. Discontinued in 2016, walnut-stocked 77/17RMs have become increasingly hard to source—especially in the excellent, lightly-used condition shown here. Collectors value its scarcity; shooters appreciate its trim handling, integral scope bases, and famously reliable 9-round rotary magazine.
Condition
Overall: Excellent. Metal retains deep factory blue with only faint handling traces. Stock shows minimal freckling in the semi-gloss varnish and sharp, unworn checkering.
Bore: Excellent—mirror-bright with sharply defined lands and grooves.
Function: Bolt locks, cycles, and cocks smoothly; safety engages positively. In short, this rifle presents and operates as if it has seen very limited field time.
What’s Included
• Ruger JMX-1 detachable 9-round rotary magazine
• Factory-machined integral scope bases (rings not included)
Why this rifle stands out:
• Scarcity & collectability – Walnut/blued 77/17 production ended seven years ago, and the .17 HMR chambering was offered for a comparatively brief run.
• Ruger accuracy pedigree – The tapered, hammer-forged 22" barrel uses a 1-in-9" RH twist optimized for the 17-grain V-Max loads that made the caliber famous.
• Classic ergonomics – Straight-comb American walnut with Ruger’s cut checkering, fluted cheek, and black pistol-grip cap balances nicely at the support hand, while a soft recoil pad and sling-swivel studs make it field-ready.
• Patented rotary magazine – Flush-fitting design keeps the belly of the rifle smooth for prone or bench work and feeds round after round without rimlock.
• Three-position wing safety – Forward to fire, center to lock the trigger while allowing bolt cycling, fully rear to lock bolt and trigger—a practical, intuitive system borrowed from the M77 center-fire line.
• Built-in optics mounting – Ruger’s machined-in scope bases are cut right into the receiver for rock-solid ring attachment without additional mounts.
Whether you’re punching paper at 100 yards, dispatching varmints on a calm summer evening, or adding a seldom-seen variant to a Ruger rimfire collection, this 77/17RM offers the craftsmanship, accuracy, and future collectability that make it a rewarding long-term companion.
