Browning Auto-5 Standard-Weight 12 Gauge H-Prefix Belgian Semi-Automatic Shotgun, 28" Full Choke (1953)
This Belgian-made Browning Auto-5 is a 1953 H-prefix Standard-Weight 12-gauge that represents the first generation of long-recoil semi-automatic shotguns. Built on a machined steel receiver with factory Grade I scroll engraving, it pairs a 28" Special Steel barrel and fixed Full choke with Browning’s signature magazine cut-off lever—features that combine collectible appeal with period-correct field configuration.

Introduced just after World War II, the H-prefix serial range marks Browning’s transition to alpha-coded numbers, giving collectors a clear production date and adding historical context to this piece. The stamped serial number H5472 places it in the second year of post-war manufacture.
The long-recoil action cycles 2 3/4" shells reliably while the magazine cut-off lever allows the shooter to remove a chambered round without unloading the magazine—a feature seldom found on modern semi-autos.
Its 28" Special Steel barrel is made from FN’s proprietary chrome-vanadium blend, advertised for strength before chrome-lining became common. The fixed Full choke (single star code) and 4+1 capacity reflect the archetypal 1950s American waterfowl setup.
A blued finish covers the receiver and barrel, complemented by modest factory scroll engraving. The round-knob walnut stock and finger-groove forend feature cut checkering and a 14" length of pull, completing the classic Auto-5 profile.
