Springfield Armory Model 1896 Krag-Jørgensen .30-40 Krag Bolt-Action Rifle, 24″ Sporterized, 1897 Production
Built at Springfield Armory in fiscal year 1897, this Model 1896 Krag-Jørgensen retains its original action and 5-round rotary magazine while displaying the classic sporterization common in the early 20th century. A 24-inch barrel, cut-down walnut stock with pistol-grip contour, and aftermarket ramp front sight give the rifle a handy, hunting-oriented profile without compromising the smooth Krag action that made the design famous.

What’s Included
- Springfield Armory Model 1896 Krag-Jørgensen rifle (sporterized)
This rifle began life as a full-length infantry arm but was thoughtfully converted for sporting use. The barrel has been shortened to 24 inches and fitted with a ramp front sight, while the original military ladder rear sight remains in place for flexible elevation adjustment.
The walnut stock was trimmed to a lighter profile, given a pistol-grip contour, and finished with a period triangular-logo ventilated rubber recoil pad. Sling-swivel studs were added, making the rifle ready for field carry.
The forged steel receiver wears a worn brown/gray patina with areas of bare steel rather than intact bluing, consistent with respectful use over more than a century. Mechanically, the Krag’s smooth bolt lift and distinctive side-loading magazine remain intact, preserving the rifle’s hallmark operating feel.
Chambered in .30-40 Krag—the United States’ first smokeless-powder service cartridge—this rifle offers shooters and collectors a tangible link to turn-of-the-century American arms development while reflecting the sporterizing trends of the 1930s–1950s.
