East German 1961 Ernst Thälmann Pistole M 9x18mm Makarov Compact DA/SA Pistol
Built at the VEB Ernst-Thälmann-Werk in Suhl during 1961, this AU-prefix Pistole M represents the short East German production run widely regarded as the highest-quality Makarov variant. Matching DDR proof marks, a high-polish blued finish, and a chrome-lined barrel give this surplus import strong collector appeal while still offering a reliable defensive sidearm.

Licensed from the Soviet PM design, the Pistole M uses a straight blowback, double-action/single-action system with a slide-mounted safety/decocker. East German machining standards produced a smooth trigger and uniform bluing that stand out among Warsaw Pact variants.
The chrome-lined 3.68-inch barrel resists corrosion and simplifies maintenance, while the exposed round hammer allows traditional thumb-cocking for precise single-action shots.
DDR-pattern narrow cocking serrations (10 left / 17 right) and the one-piece wrap-around black grip give the pistol its distinct East German profile. The frame omits the later lanyard ring, keeping the pistol slim for concealed or holster carry.
Import markings from RUKO Products, Buffalo NY, on the right side of the slide verify its early-1990s entry into the U.S. surplus market. Collectors seeking an authentic Cold-War-era sidearm will appreciate the clear boxed K100 acceptance stamp on the left side of the frame and diamond-within-circle proof still sharp on the slide.
