R.F. Sedgley Springfield Model 1903 Special Grade Sporter .30-06 Bolt-Action Rifle, 24" Barrel
This R.F. Sedgley Special Grade Sporter is a limited-production, inter-war conversion of the U.S. M1903 Springfield, serial number 2269 in Sedgley’s proprietary four-digit sequence. Built in Philadelphia during the 1920s–1930s, it retains its factory-installed 24-inch sporter contour barrel, oil-finished walnut stock, and polished bolt body. Collectors value Sedgley’s work for its careful re-heat treatment of surplus receivers, precise machining, and restrained sporter styling—traits all present on this rifle.

What’s Included
- R.F. Sedgley Springfield Model 1903 Special Grade Sporter .30-06 rifle
Sedgley started with a U.S. military 1903 action and performed a full re-heat treatment before machining, ensuring strength for modern sporting loads. The receiver bears the distinctive circled “S” proof confirming Sedgley’s work.
The carbon-steel barrel is marked “SPECIAL CAL .30’06” and “R.F. SEDGLEY, INC. PHILA. PA.” Its 24-inch length and sporter contour reduce weight while maintaining the .30-06’s velocity potential. A ramped front sight with brass-bead blade is installed; the rear receiver bridge is drilled and tapped for an aperture sight (not included).
The oil-finished walnut stock features a graceful pistol grip, crisp checkering, and integral sling-swivel eyelets. Sedgley’s hand-fitting gives the action a smooth bolt throw and reliable feeding from the five-round internal magazine.
With its documented Special Grade status, low Sedgley serial number, and preserved original components, this rifle represents an important chapter in early American custom sporting arms.
