Savage Arms Model 388 .22 LR Semi-Automatic Carbine | 16.5-Inch Barrel, Tubular Magazine, 1969–70s Production
The Savage Arms Model 388 is a compact, blowback-operated .22 LR carbine produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its short 16.5-inch barrel, fixed 15-round tubular magazine, and alloy receiver distinguish it within Savage’s rimfire line. A post-1968 “A” serial prefix confirms its later production, making this rifle one of the final U.S. economy rimfires before Savage transitioned to the Model 64 platform.

The 16.5-inch carbon-steel barrel is notably shorter than most Model 388 variants, giving this rifle quick handling while keeping overall length compact. Its blued finish remains even, matching the matte-anodized alloy receiver.
A fixed tubular magazine under the barrel holds approximately 15 rounds of .22 LR, offering ample capacity without the need for detachable magazines. The simple blowback action keeps cycling reliable with standard-velocity loads.
The hardwood stock features a straight comb and semi-pistol grip, finished in oil/varnish that complements the classic rimfire look. Length of pull measures 14 inches, suitable for most adult shooters.
Open iron sights consist of a drift-pinned front blade and an elevator-adjustable rear leaf, providing a familiar sight picture for target or small-game use. A manual sliding/tang safety and round bolt handle complete the straightforward controls.
Proofed with an “XII” inspection stamp and marked “USA,” this Model 388 sits within the Savage/Stevens “click-clack” rimfire family that traces back to the Model 87, offering collectors a link to a well-known American rimfire lineage.
