Mossberg S42M .22 LR Bolt-Action Rifle, WWII-Era Mannlicher Stock, 23" Barrel
Manufactured between 1940 and 1944, the Mossberg S42M is a scarce civilian bolt-action rimfire that bridged pre-war sporting designs with the company’s later U.S. military trainers. Fewer than 50,000 were produced, and this example stands out for its full-length Mannlicher stock, precise S130 micro-click aperture sight system, and clean, original blued finish.

What’s Included
- Mossberg factory 7-round steel box magazine
Produced during the WWII era, the S42M was the forerunner to Mossberg’s 42M-B and Model 44 U.S. training rifles, but lacks the U.S. Property markings found on those later models. That makes this civilian variant a distinct piece for collectors who appreciate wartime manufacturing history without military stampings.
The rifle features a 23" blued steel barrel paired with Mossberg’s S130 micro-click aperture rear sight and a ramped dovetail blade front sight, providing precise elevation and windage adjustments straight from the factory.
Its hardwood Mannlicher stock, complete with cheek-piece and QD sling swivels, is uncommon on American rimfire rifles of the period and gives the gun a balanced, European profile while protecting the barrel along its full length.
A smooth bolt action feeds from a detachable 7-round magazine, and the 13.5" length of pull offers comfortable shouldering for most shooters. Overall, this S42M combines collectible status with practical shooting features in a package that remains faithful to its 1940s origins.
