What’s Included
- Stevens-Springfield Model 87A .22 LR semi-automatic rifle
Manufactured in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, this Model 87A represents the early, serial-number-exempt run made prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act. Multiple U.S. patent numbers are roll-marked on the left side of the receiver, underscoring Stevens’ push to market a fully patented rimfire design through Montgomery Ward’s Springfield brand.
The rifle feeds from a fixed 14-round tubular magazine located beneath the 24-inch carbon-steel barrel. Its patented multi-length feed system lets the shooter run .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle without adjustment—an uncommon feature for its era.
Eight vented “gill” slots along the receiver aid in cooling and give the rifle its recognizable profile. The push-in bolt handle can be locked forward to convert the action to manual single-shot operation, a safety and training convenience valued by many early owners.
The hardwood stock sports a semi-beavertail fore-end and pistol-grip buttstock finished in traditional oil. A hard-rubber buttplate caps the 13.75" length of pull. Although the front blade sight is absent, the elevator-adjustable rear sight remains intact, leaving ample options for replacement or optic installation.
