Product Description

    Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle, Solid-Frame, .45-70 Gov’t, 26" Octagon Barrel (1901)

Manufactured in 1901, this Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle is a solid-frame, standard-grade example of John Browning’s powerhouse lever action. Chambered in .45-70 Gov’t, it features a 26-inch octagon barrel, full-length magazine, and plain walnut furniture. A Williams micrometer aperture sight has been professionally installed on the tang, giving the rifle precise, adjustable sighting while retaining its classic profile.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Good – showing some signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Good – clean, well-maintained, minor wear marks.
Rifling Condition: Good – intact, well-defined lands and grooves.
Specific Condition Notes: This rifle displays minor to moderate scratching, scuffing, finish loss, and blemishes consistent with regular field use. It still functions smoothly and presents well for its age.

    What’s Included

    • Williams micrometer aperture sight (installed)

Winchester introduced the Model 1886 to handle the powerful black-powder and early smokeless cartridges of the era. The twin locking-block action on this rifle remains tight and is known for its strength.

The 26-inch octagon barrel delivers classic balance and offers eight rounds in the full-length tubular magazine, plus one in the chamber. The blued finish contrasts with the case-hardened receiver, both original to the rifle.

Standard-grade straight-grip walnut stock and matching forearm retain solid fit. The wood shows honest handling marks but no structural issues, preserving the rifle’s original character.

The serial number (123646) falls within Cody Firearms Museum records, allowing a buyer to request a factory letter for additional provenance.
