Mossberg Model 144 LSB .22 LR Bolt-Action Target Rifle, Heavy 27" AC-KRO-GRUV Barrel
The Model 144 LSB represents the last and most refined variant of Mossberg’s 144 series of small-bore match rifles. Produced in North Haven during the mid-1970s, this full-size gun features a 27-inch heavy barrel with AC-KRO-GRUV broach-cut rifling, a walnut Monte Carlo stock, and the factory 7-round detachable magazine system. Built for three-position competition, it weighs about nine pounds and carries the “I” serial prefix that marks the final production run.

The 27-inch, 15⁄16-inch-diameter heavy barrel uses Mossberg’s proprietary AC-KRO-GRUV rifling, known for producing tight groups in small-bore competition. Combined with the rifle’s weight and full-length stock, it delivers excellent stability in prone, kneeling, and standing positions.
As the “LSB” sub-model, this rifle was the final iteration of the 144 line and incorporates a beavertail fore-end, white-line spacer, and serrated alloy butt-plate for a secure shoulder fit. The Monte Carlo cheek-piece aligns naturally with a scope, while the installed Weaver bases make mounting optics straightforward.
The two-position safety with red fire dot indicator offers quick visual confirmation of status. A 13.5-inch length of pull suits most adult shooters, and the oil-finished walnut stock adds classic match-rifle aesthetics.
Factory configuration called for Lyman 57MS rear and 17A front sights; these have been removed in favor of the current scope-ready setup, allowing the buyer to tailor the sight system to modern preferences.
Manufactured in the United States during the 1970s, the Model 144 LSB remains sought after by collectors and shooters who appreciate its purpose-built design and Mossberg’s legacy in small-bore competition.
