Mid-19th Century Unmarked 12 Gauge Percussion Side-by-Side Shotgun, 33" Twist-Steel Barrels, Light Scroll Engraving
This antique double-barrel shotgun is an unmarked trade-pattern percussion gun dating to roughly 1840–1870. It features 33-inch twist-steel barrels, external hammers, and light foliate scroll engraving on both lockplates. As a true black-powder muzzleloader with no maker’s marks, it represents the utilitarian sporting arms common in the mid-Victorian era and would serve well as a display piece or restoration project.

What’s Included
- Unbranded 12 gauge percussion side-by-side shotgun
- Wooden ramrod
The 33-inch side-by-side barrels are made of iron/twist steel, a hallmark of period construction before fluid-steel tubes became standard. Their browned finish and visible twist pattern add authentic 19th-century character.
External, double-set hammers pair with separate percussion nipples, allowing two independent shots—one from each barrel—through a traditional double-trigger setup. Even in its current state, the locks retain enough function to cock and hold.
Light foliate scroll engraving on both lockplates provides understated decoration, indicating factory embellishment despite the absence of a maker’s name. The straight English-style walnut stock features point-pattern checkering at the wrist and a 14.25-inch length of pull.
A small front bead is the shotgun’s only sighting aid, consistent with mid-century bird guns meant for instinctive shooting. The original wooden ramrod remains secured beneath the barrels, an increasingly scarce accessory on antique muzzleloaders.
With genuine antique status, period construction, and intact core components, this side-by-side offers historical appeal for collectors, decorators, or anyone interested in taking on a careful refurbishment.
