Universal M1 Carbine 3rd Generation .30 Carbine Semi-Automatic Rifle, 18" Blued Barrel
This Universal Firearms 3rd-generation M1 Carbine combines the classic World War II profile with the company’s final design updates from the mid-1980s. Produced under Iver Johnson ownership between 1983 and 1986, this rifle features the proprietary dual-spring receiver, ventilated steel handguard, and patent 3,382,766 gas-piston nut that set late-production Universals apart. Serial number 450XXX falls well within the documented 3rd-gen block, making this example a clear representation of the last carbines to bear the “UNIVERSAL” roll-mark.

What’s Included
- Universal M1 Carbine 3rd Generation semi-automatic rifle
- 2× 15-round magazines
- Green cotton web sling (installed)
Universal’s 3rd-generation receiver is investment-cast steel and uses dual forward recoil springs coupled to a proprietary slide, a layout that improves smoothness but limits interchangeability with USGI parts. Collectors appreciate this distinctive engineering as it marks a clear departure from earlier Universal and military designs.
The 18" carbon-steel barrel retains its factory blued finish and is chambered in the original .30 Carbine cartridge. A cast post front sight with protective ears is drift-adjustable, while the rear dual-aperture ladder is click-adjustable for both windage and elevation, preserving the familiar sight picture while allowing precise zeroing.
A ventilated stamped-steel upper handguard aids cooling during sustained fire—one of several commercial touches unique to late-model Universals. The hardwood stock has a pistol grip profile and an integral sling slot, providing traditional handling and quick attachment for the included GI-style web sling.
This rifle was produced near the end of Universal’s run, when the company operated under Iver Johnson. As such, it represents one of the last commercial M1 Carbines branded “UNIVERSAL,” giving it added appeal for collectors tracking post-war developments of the platform.
