Colt Sporter Lightweight 9mm AR-15 Pre-Ban Semi-Auto Rifle, NL-Prefix, 16" Chrome-Lined Barrel, Rare Early 1990s Production
This Colt Sporter Lightweight is a factory 9mm AR-15 produced in the early 1990s before the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. Built on a forged 7075-T6 aluminum receiver and finished in Colt grey anodizing, it carries an NL-prefix low serial number that places it among the first few hundred made. Collectors value these rifles for their true pre-ban configuration, proprietary Colt 9mm system, and original factory features that remain intact on this example.

The heart of this Sporter Lightweight is a 16" chrome-lined, pencil-profile barrel marked “C MP”, reflecting Colt proofing standards. Combined with a 1:10 RH twist, it is optimized for standard 9mm loads while keeping weight down.
The rifle runs a straight-blowback action derived from the Colt Model 635 SMG. A factory-pinned sear-block lower, large-pin fire-control group, and proprietary steel magazine-well adaptor are all original to the gun and correct for the model.
Colt’s distinctive grey anodized finish matches the forged upper and lower receivers, while a two-position collapsible Fiber-Lite stock, round ribbed polymer handguard, and original A1 flash suppressor keep the carbine true to period form. The A1 front post and dual-aperture flip rear sight in the carry handle provide the classic iron-sight picture.
Being a genuine pre-ban example with an NL-prefix low serial number, this rifle is both legally desirable in restrictive states and highly sought after by Colt collectors. Its excellent bore, intact factory parts, and limited production status enhance its long-term collectability.
