Springfield Armory Model 1863 Type II Artillery Conversion, .58 Caliber Percussion Muzzle-Loader, 34-Inch Barrel
This Springfield Armory Model 1863 Type II is a post-Civil War artillery length conversion that shortens the original infantry rifle to a handier single-band format. Chambered in .58 black powder and retaining its side-lock percussion ignition, this antique shows the practical modifications field armorers made for artillery and cadet use while preserving the last U.S. Army muzzle-loading service pattern.

What’s Included
- Springfield Model 1863 Type II artillery length conversion rifle (ramrod not present)
The 34-inch barrel reflects the artillery conversion that reduced the original 40-inch tube to improve balance for non-infantry roles. This change also removed the bayonet lug and rear sight, leaving a single iron band and a fixed front blade.
Iron furniture, an armory bright finish, and a full-length walnut stock with oil finish preserve the military styling of the era. An under-barrel rib remains in place for ramrod retention, although the rod itself is no longer present.
