This Second-Issue Colt Service Model Ace is a dedicated .22 LR trainer built on the classic 1911 platform. Colt introduced the second-issue Service Model Ace in 1978 as an improved .22 LR companion to the Government Model. This example, serial number SM42569, falls near the midpoint of the approximate 30,000-pistol production run and reflects Colt’s late-commercial blue era finishing quality.
The Williams floating chamber inside the 4.75-inch carbon-steel barrel boosts recoil energy, allowing the slide to cycle with standard-velocity rimfire ammunition. Shooters experience a realistic 1911 feel while saving on ammunition costs.
Sighting is handled by a dovetailed serrated ramp front blade paired with a Colt Accro fully adjustable rear sight, letting the user dial in precise elevation and windage adjustments. The matte top of the slide reduces glare, while polished flats accent the classic blued appearance.
Checkered walnut grips with gold Rampant-Colt medallions, a spur hammer, short serrated trigger, and standard thumb and grip safeties preserve the traditional Government Model controls. Combined with its collectible status and well-maintained bore, this Service Model Ace stands out as an accurate and historically significant rimfire 1911.
