HK VP70Z 9mm Luger Semi-Auto Pistol – 4.6 in Barrel, 18+1 Capacity, Early Polymer Frame
The HK VP70Z stands out as the first mass-produced polymer-framed handgun, pairing a glass-fibre-reinforced frame with an 18-round flush-fit magazine and a unique straight-blowback, striker-fired system. Built in West Germany during the late 1970s and early 1980s, this civilian “Z” variant omits the stock interface found on military models, making it a rarer find for collectors and shooters alike.

The VP70Z’s polymer frame was decades ahead of its time, predating other well-known polymer pistols by more than a decade. Its glass-fibre-reinforced construction keeps weight down while maintaining durability.
This civilian variant features a double-action-only trigger with a consistent 20-pound pull, a front-of-trigger-guard magazine release, and fixed iron sights. The combination delivers reliable operation without external safeties or decocking levers.
The matte gray phosphate slide sports rear cocking serrations and a stippled top to reduce glare. German nitro eagle and Ulm antler proofs, along with the HK Inc. Arlington VA import mark, confirm West German manufacture and U.S. importation.
An 18-round magazine capacity sets the VP70Z apart from most contemporaries, offering impressive firepower in a flush-fit design. The straight-blowback system is unusual for a full-size 9 mm pistol, further enhancing its mechanical appeal.
