The Topper M48 was the first H&R single-barrel to carry the "Topper" name, produced circa 1943–1956. This example dates to 1948 and carries correct factory markings: "TOPPER M48 / HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON ARMS CO / WORCESTER, MASS — MADE IN U.S.A." on the receiver and "MADE IN U.S.A. .410 GA CHOKE" on the barrel.
It is built on a steel receiver with a case-hardened finish and a blued barrel. Operation is via a top-tang break-open lever and an exposed rebounding hammer. Factory literature for the Model 48 highlights a self-adjusting latch and a snap-on forearm, features that define the platform’s straightforward, durable design.
The 28-inch barrel pairs a fixed Improved Cylinder choke with a 2 3/4 in chamber, a configuration that complements the .410 bore. Sights are simple and practical: a single front bead with no rear sight, as originally intended.
The wood stock has a pistol-grip profile and a hard-rubber H&R monogram buttplate, with a measured length of pull of 14.25 inches. Capacity is one round, as expected for a classic single-shot field gun.
