What’s Included
- Winchester Model 1886 rifle chambered in .45-70 Govt (rechambered from .38-70 in the 1970s)
This Model 1886 was manufactured in 1896 (MFG. 1896) and reflects the period-correct configuration with an upper tang marked "MODEL 1886" and lower tang patent dates "OCT. 14, 1884 / JAN. 20, 1885." The barrel is stamped "45 70 W.C.F." The rifle retains its right-side loading gate and top-eject receiver, true to the platform’s classic layout.
The 26-inch full-octagon barrel pairs with a full-length tubular magazine for a stated 7+1 capacity. Sighting is traditional, with a dovetailed front blade and a barrel-mounted rear sight with stepped elevator for adjustments along the length of the barrel.
Stock furniture is original in style, featuring a straight-grip walnut stock with smooth panels and a crescent steel buttplate. A knurled hammer spur provides positive purchase. Length of pull measures 13.5 inches, offering a familiar fit for a period Winchester rifle.
Per notes, this rifle was originally chambered in .38-70 and, back in the 1970s, someone had it rechambered to .45-70. It now presents as a .45-70 Govt rifle while retaining its 1890s Winchester character and markings.
Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1886 uses the twin locking-block lever-action system for strength with big-bore cartridges. This example was produced in the United States during the 1890s and aligns with the hallmark features collectors and enthusiasts look for in an antique 1886.
