The Winchester Model 55 stands out for its unique single-shot, self-ejecting open-bolt design. It loads from the top through a hinged oval chute, ejects downward, and automatically cocks for the next shot. Produced in the late 1950s to 1961 with approximately 47,000 made in the United States, many examples were not serialized. This lightweight, 1-round .22 S/L/LR rifle features a 22" steel barrel, blued finish, and open sights.

The Model 55 uses a single-shot, semi-automatic (self-ejecting, self-cocking) open-bolt blowback action. It loads from the top via a hinged oval chute and ejects downward through a bottom port. A right-side charging slide controls the bolt.
Safety features include a tang safety and an automatic safety that engages during loading. The design provides straightforward handling with 1-round capacity and a factory weight of approximately 5.5 lb.
The rifle is chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle. It has a 22" round steel barrel with a plain crown and open sights: a dovetailed front blade on a ramp and an open rear leaf with a stepped elevator. No scope grooves are visible on the receiver.
The blued steel receiver and barrel are paired with a hardwood stock featuring a straight comb and a checkered hard rubber buttplate. Length of pull is 13.25.
Made in the United States during the late 1950s–early 1960s, production ran until 1961 with approximately 47,000 made. Many rifles from this run were not serialized, adding period-correct context for collectors.
