Remington Model 788 .308 Win Bolt-Action Rifle, 22 inch Sporter Barrel, Hardwood Stock, 1971 Production
This Remington Model 788 in .308 Win stands out as an early 1970s example, verified by the barrel date code "CU" indicating April 1971. It features a 22-inch sporter barrel, a hardwood walnut-finished stock in the earlier non-fluted comb pattern, and the 788’s distinctive nine rear locking lugs. The Model 788 action uses nine rear locking lugs and a plunger-type ejector, paired with a round receiver and a small ejection port. Chambered in .308 Winchester with a 3+1 capacity, it carries a 22-inch sporter-profile barrel for a balanced field setup.
Sight and mounting provisions include a hoodless ramp front sight and a receiver that is drilled and tapped. The rear barrel sight base has been removed, leaving two empty screw holes on the barrel. An unbranded one-piece scope base is installed; no optic is included.
The hardwood stock is walnut-finished with a straight comb and pistol grip, uncheckered, and fitted with a black buttplate. This example reflects the earlier pre-1980 non-fluted comb pattern and includes a front sling swivel stud. Length of pull measures 13.5 inches.
Controls and markings are consistent with the period: a two-position safety lever at the right rear of the receiver, a detachable single-column steel magazine stamped "308 WIN," and the barrel legend "REMINGTON ARMS CO., INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A." Proofs include the Remington barrel date code "CU" and a small triangular inspection stamp on the barrel shank, placing production in April 1971 in the United States.
