The Smith & Wesson CS40 Chief's Special is a subcompact, single-stack, metal-frame .40 S&W from S&W's Third Generation line. This example pairs a stainless 3.25 in barrel with a matte black steel slide and aluminum-alloy frame, and features a left-side-only slide-mounted safety/decocker with an exposed spur hammer. It carries 7+1 rounds, wears fixed low-profile 3-dot sights, and is slide-marked "Chief's Special" with the S&W crest. The CS40 delivers a proven DA/SA system with a slide-mounted safety/decocker on the left side and an exposed spur hammer. Rear-only slide serrations and an external extractor support reliable manipulation and operation in a compact footprint.
Its construction combines a stainless steel 3.25 in barrel with a matte black carbon steel slide and a matte black aluminum-alloy frame. Overall length is approximately 6.5 in and weight is about 24 oz, keeping the pistol trim and carryable while retaining an all-metal build.
Sighting is straightforward and robust with fixed, low-profile 3-dot sights (white front and rear). A one-piece wraparound textured rubber grip with S&W medallions provides a secure, hand-filling hold on the single-stack frame.
Chambered in .40 S&W with a 7+1 capacity, the CS40 is marked "Chief's Special" with the S&W crest on the slide and was made in the USA. As part of S&W’s Third Generation series, and with a shorter production span than the CS9/CS45, it stands out among metal-frame subcompacts in this caliber.
