Sauer & Sohn K98k Russian Capture, Code 147 (1940) – 8mm Mauser Bolt-Action Rifle, German WWII, 23.62 in Barrel
This 1940 Sauer & Sohn Karabiner 98k is a German-made, Russian-capture example identified by the X on the receiver ring and the manufacturer code 147. It retains multiple German Waffenamt eagle proofs, including eagle/655, with additional receiver markings that include "Mod.98" and the importer stamp from I.O. Inc., Monroe, NC. A force-matched electro-penciled bolt and non-matching assembly numbers are consistent with Russian arsenal rework. The bore remains in good condition with strong rifling, and the rifle preserves hallmark K98k features with a 600 mm (23.62 in) barrel and tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 m.
Multiple "Dirty Bird" stamps are present on the receiver.
Condition
Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Good - Clean, well-maintained, minor wear marks.
Bore Rifling: Good Rifling - Intact, well-defined lands and grooves.
Specific Condition Notes: This Sauer & Sohn K98k shows heavy service wear consistent with a wartime rifle. The blued finish has largely worn to a mottled grey-brown patina with scattered surface oxidation and peppering on the barrel and receiver. The trigger pack is missing the rear mounting screw and will require a replacement for proper stabilization. The laminated or walnut stock exhibits heavy field dings, oil staining, and handling marks. Despite the exterior wear, the bore remains in good condition with strong, visible rifling.
What's Included
- Sauer & Sohn Karabiner 98k Russian Capture bolt-action rifle (8mm Mauser)
Built in 1940 and coded 147 for Sauer & Sohn, this K98k reflects wartime German manufacture and later Russian-capture history. The receiver ring bears the distinctive X capture stamp, and the left receiver carries the "Mod.98" marking. Multiple German Waffenamt eagle proofs, including eagle/655, are present along with several "Dirty Bird" stamps on the receiver.
As a Russian-capture arsenal rework, the rifle features a force-matched electro-penciled bolt with non-matching assembly numbers on several parts. The import mark reads "I.O. INC., MONROE, NC – K.98 GERMANY – 8x57IS," documenting later importation and caliber designation.
The rifle retains its core K98k configuration: a 600 mm (23.62 in) barrel, a tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 m, and a banded front blade (hood not installed). The front band includes a bayonet lug, and the action is the classic Mauser 98 controlled-round-feed bolt system.
The laminated hardwood stock shows typical front-line wear and is configured with a right-side sling slot, takedown disk, and a stamped cupped buttplate. Length of pull measures 13.0 inches, and the internal fixed magazine holds 5+1 rounds loaded by stripper clip.
Made in Germany, this rifle combines documented markings, period-correct features, and a good bore, making it a representative example of a Sauer-coded K98k with Russian-capture provenance.
