- J.C. Higgins Model 10 (583.15) 20 Gauge bolt-action shotgun
Made by High Standard for Sears under the J.C. Higgins trade name, this Model 10 reflects mid-century American bolt-action shotgun design. It features a turned-down bolt handle, right-side ejection, a manual safety, and an under-barrel tubular magazine. The blued steel receiver and barrel are paired with a slim, uncheckered hardwood stock and fore-end.
The 26-inch barrel uses a fixed Full choke and a plain, non-ribbed profile with a single brass bead front sight and no rear sight. Chambering is 2 3/4 inches, suitable for standard 20 gauge loads in that length. The length of pull measures 13.5 inches, aided by a rubber recoil pad with a black spacer.
This example is rollmarked with Sears ident number 583.15 for clear model verification. As a pre-1968 retail firearm, it does not have a serial number present, which aligns with common practices of its production era.
Historical note: Sears issued a 1998 notice regarding potential bolt-system issues associated with certain J.C. Higgins Model 10 ident numbers, including the 583.13–583.22 range.
