The Model 4006 is an all-stainless steel pistol with both slide and frame finished in matte stainless, giving it notable durability and a consistent duty-ready appearance. The frame includes a checkered steel frontstrap paired with a one-piece wraparound black textured polymer grip bearing S&W medallions for secure handling.
Controls and operation align with Smith & Wesson’s Third Generation design. This pistol uses a DA/SA trigger system with a smooth, curved trigger and an ambidextrous slide-mounted safety/decocker. The magazine release is on the left side, and the hammer is a traditional spur type.
The slide is built for reliable service use, featuring rear vertical serrations, a lowered ejection port, and an external extractor. Sights are fixed, low-mount three-dot, with a front dot and a two-dot rear for a straightforward sight picture that stays low to the slide.
Chambered in .40 S&W with an 11+1 capacity and a 4-inch barrel, the Model 4006 was among the earliest pistols designed specifically around the .40 S&W cartridge. This example is the standard non-TSW, non-rail configuration, reflecting the original service pattern used widely by U.S. law enforcement.
