The Model 51 uses the Pedersen hesitation-locked system with a fixed barrel and the recoil spring wrapped around the barrel. This setup, paired with the internal-hammer, single-action mechanism, delivers the model’s signature handling characteristics. The top-mounted ejection port and separate breechblock are distinctive design elements of this series.
Controls and safety features are comprehensive for its time: a grip safety, a manual safety that also locks the slide to the rear, and a magazine disconnect. The pistol employs a heel-style magazine release, and the frame includes a lanyard hole.
Sighting equipment consists of fixed sights with a half-moon blade front and a notch rear. The slide shows approximately nine wide rear vertical serrations and longitudinal anti-glare serrations across the top. The finish is blued over a carbon-steel frame and slide, complemented by black checkered hard-rubber grips bearing Remington UMC medallions.
