The Steelbilt designation denotes forged-steel construction, and this gun bears the correct factory barrel rollmark: "MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. — PATENTS PENDING — MODEL 37 — STEELBILT — 16 GA. — WINCHESTER TRADEMARK — CHOKE." The underside of the receiver is stamped "WINCHESTER," consistent with period production.
Its 30 inch plain barrel uses a fixed choke and a simple front bead, with no rear sight, delivering the straightforward sight picture expected of the Model 37. The bore presents as clean and shiny on inspection, with the bore condition noted above.
The action is a single-shot, top-lever break-open design with an exposed hammer and a single trigger. This classic configuration is true to the Model 37 pattern produced in large numbers from 1936 to 1963.
The walnut furniture includes a pistol-grip stock and a semi-beavertail forend, with a measured length of pull of 14.0 inches. These features offer a traditional feel and handling associated with Winchester’s utility-oriented single-shots.
Made in the United States by Winchester Repeating Arms in New Haven, this Model 37 reflects one of Winchester’s most widely produced shotguns, with over 1,015,000 made. It is serial-number exempt as is correct for this model.
