The Highway Patrolman is the duty-focused variant of the deluxe Model 27, built on S&W’s heavy N-frame for strength and longevity with .357 Magnum. This 28-2 revision incorporates the updated cylinder-stop system and omits the earlier front trigger-guard screw, aligning it with the engineering changes of the period.
The 6-inch barrel is pinned, and the revolver currently wears a non-recessed replacement cylinder that is not factory-original for a 28-2. The topstrap and rib are matte bead-blasted to reduce glare, and the overall finish is a matte/satin blue suited to service use.
Sights consist of a ramped front sight paired with a micrometer-adjustable rear, offering a clear, tunable sight picture. The action is double-action/single-action, with a serrated trigger face and an exposed hammer featuring a checkered spur for confident cocking.
The square-butt carbon-steel frame wears factory checkered walnut Magna diamond grips with S&W medallions, a hallmark of period-correct N-frame revolvers. Markings include "MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." and the S&W circular trademark logo, with U.S. manufacture during the 1960s (approx. 1962–1963).
