The Model 740 launched Remington’s modern line of gas-operated, autoloading hunting rifles that later evolved into the 742, 7400, and 750. This example employs Remington’s "impulse reaction" gas system and features right-side ejection with a round charging knob for straightforward operation.
It uses a 22" barrel paired with open sights: a ramped front blade and a folding rear leaf on an elevation ramp. This sight arrangement provides a clear, traditional sight picture without additional complexity.
The furniture is uncheckered wood with a straight-comb stock and a long, rounded fore-end that includes finger-groove panels. A serrated metal buttplate marked "Remington" and a 13.5" length of pull round out the classic handling characteristics.
