The Sportsman '48 is the factory three-shot version of the Model 11-48, offering a 2+1 capacity and long-recoil operation. This example was produced in February 1967, as indicated by the LPJ barrel date code, and was made in the United States with a blued steel receiver and barrel.

Engraving includes scrollwork with a pointing dog and flushing pheasants on the right side and waterfowl in flight on the left. The engraving extends onto the barrel and the trigger guard, which is also engraved. The bolt is engine-turned (jeweled), adding a period-correct finish detail.
The walnut stock and fore-end feature deep relief carving with cut checkering, including a pheasant-in-grass panel on the right side of the butt. It is fitted with a hard buttplate, and the length of pull measures 14.0 inches. Additional functional details include a cross-bolt safety and a knurled magazine cap.
