This Afghan jezail represents classic regional architecture from the 19th century, with provenance to a purchase made in Afghanistan in the early 1960s. It is presented as an original period rifle rather than a later reproduction or tourist-trade fabrication following 9/11.
The rifle carries a 46 in round steel barrel retained by multiple brass bands and two iron sling rings. It has a full-length wood stock with a pronounced Afghan hooked butt and a D-shaped metal trigger guard, with a length of pull measuring 11.5 in.
The lockwork is a miquelet-type flintlock with a ring-neck cock and a single curved trigger. As a traditional single-shot, muzzle-loading long gun, its capacity is 1.
Decoration is extensive: heavy mother-of-pearl and bone/horn inlays, brass overlays and escutcheons, and large bone/horn side panels at the breech. The brass barrel bands exhibit chased/engraved motifs, adding distinctive regional character and craftsmanship to this antique piece.
