Saginaw SG M1 Carbine .30 Carbine – FAT 68 Terni Arsenal Rebuild, Parkerized, 18-Inch Barrel, WWII-Era
This Saginaw Steering Gear (SG) M1 Carbine is a World War II–era rifle later overhauled at Italy’s Terni arsenal in 1968, as marked by the ★ FAT 68 stock stamp. Built within SG’s scarce 3.25–3.65 million serial range—only about 8 percent of total M1 Carbine production—this example features a parkerized finish, low-wood walnut stock, stamped adjustable rear sight, and type II barrel band without bayonet lug. Its MAP-return provenance and SG manufacturer make it an appealing piece for collectors of U.S. military arms.

Produced by General Motors’ Saginaw Steering Gear Division, this carbine represents one of the less common makers in the M1 Carbine program, adding manufacturer scarcity to its appeal. The SG receiver retains its arsenal-applied manganese-phosphate finish, offering classic service-grade protection against wear and corrosion.
The 1968 Italian overhaul at Terni updated the rifle with a stamped adjustable rear aperture sight (300–800 yards) and retained the earlier type II barrel band without a bayonet lug, giving the carbine a transitional mix of wartime and post-war features that collectors often seek.
Furniture consists of a low-wood walnut stock and matching two-rivet handguard, both bearing the ★ FAT 68 stamp that verifies the rebuild. The stock maintains a 13.1-inch length of pull while preserving the carbine’s lightweight handling.
Mechanically, the rifle follows the original design: semi-automatic, gas-operated system with a rotating bolt and a flip-style lever safety. Chambered in .30 Carbine, it feeds from the included 15-round magazine, keeping the rifle period-correct for WWII-issue configuration.
