The SCAR 17S uses a semi-automatic, short-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, delivering reliable function with 7.62x51 NATO. Controls are user-friendly with an ambidextrous magazine release and safety/selector. The reciprocating charging handle ships on the left side and is side-swappable for setup flexibility.
Its 16.25-inch barrel is cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined, free-floating, and magnetic particle inspected. The barrel features a 1:12 RH twist and is threaded, fitted with a multi-port muzzle brake bearing U.S. Patent No. 8,042,448 and secured by a hex jam nut.
The monolithic aluminum upper integrates a continuous MIL-STD-1913 top rail indexed 1–39. The forend adds elongated cooling slots and accessory rails at 3 and 6 o'clock for mounting compatible equipment.
Folding iron sights are included: a folding front sight on the gas block and a folding rear aperture sight with an elevation drum marked 3–6. The rifle also includes a side-folding, telescoping FDE polymer stock with an adjustable cheekpiece and rubber buttpad, plus an A2-style textured pistol grip. Length of pull is 12.0.
The FDE two-tone finish is complemented by factory markings, including the receiver marked 'FN COLUMBIA, SC USA' with the FN oval logo and a barrel marked 'MP 7.62x51MM 1/12.' Capacity is 20+1, and the rifle is made in the USA.
