The FN FNAR is FN Herstal's re-engineered take on the Browning BAR ShortTrac, built for precision semi-automatic performance with a short-stroke gas piston and rotating multi-lug bolt. This Belgian-made example features FNH USA receiver markings, a 20-inch fluted chrome-moly barrel with a hard-chromed bore and chamber, and a modular stock system. It includes a 20-round steel magazine, the factory hard case, the FNAR owner's manual, and spare cheekpieces and butt pads.

FN designed the FNAR around a proven lineage, deriving it from the Browning BAR ShortTrac and updating it with a short-stroke gas piston system and a rotating multi-lug bolt. Introduced circa 2008–2009 for precision and law-enforcement roles, factory literature cited approximately 1-MOA accuracy potential.
The 20-inch chrome-moly steel barrel is fluted with a recessed crown and features a hard-chromed bore and chamber. It uses a 1:12 RH twist suitable for common 7.62x51mm NATO loads. This rifle is configured without sights and has a continuous Picatinny top rail on the receiver, with additional accessory rails at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock on the forend.
The receiver is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy with a hard-coat anodized finish. Controls include an ambidextrous paddle-style magazine release positioned at the front of the trigger guard and a cross-bolt safety with a red indicator ring for status at a glance.
The polymer stock integrates a pistol grip and a comprehensive fitment system: interchangeable cheekpieces, multiple butt pads, a shim system, molded checkering, and a rear sling swivel stud. Length of pull is 14.0 inches. Capacity is 20+1 with the included steel magazine. Markings include the FN oval logo and FN HERSTAL BELGIUM – FNH USA FREDERICKSBURG, VA, reflecting pre-2014 FNH USA branding.
