The Sport II configuration centers on a 16 in 4140 steel barrel with a corrosion-resistant nitride finish, chambered in 5.56 NATO and marked “5.56 NATO 1/9.” It uses a 1:9 twist to stabilize a wide range of common bullet weights, and the threaded muzzle is fitted with the A2 flash hider. A carbine-length gas system keeps the handling lively while maintaining reliability.
The upper receiver is a forged aluminum, flat-top design with T-markings (T2–T12) and factory “-S&W-” on the rail. It is equipped with a forward assist, ejection-port dust cover, and brass deflector. Receiver markings include the S&W logo, “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MA MADE IN U.S.A.” and “MODEL M&P-15.”
Furniture is straightforward and durable: a collapsible, multi-position stock, A2-style polymer pistol grip, and a carbine-length, two-piece ribbed polymer handguard. The rifle features a manual safety and a standard AR-15 control layout. Capacity is 30+1 with standard magazines.
Sighting equipment includes a fixed A2 front sight base with an integral bayonet lug and sling swivel. The upper is a flat-top Picatinny pattern; no rear sight is included.
