It features a 3.1-inch stainless steel barrel and stainless slide with a black Melonite-type finish, and it comes with both 6- and 7-round magazines. The model fires with the magazine removed and represents the original Shield line introduced in 2012, prior to the later Shield Plus series.

The M&P40 Shield Gen 1 delivers a slim, micro-size profile built around a single-stack magazine, making it an easy-carry .40 S&W that retains duty-caliber performance. This example includes a manual thumb safety and the hinged trigger found across the M&P series.
Its stainless steel barrel and stainless slide wear a black Melonite-type finish for added surface hardness and corrosion resistance. Rear-only cocking serrations provide straightforward manipulation without adding bulk.
Upgraded TG-H3 tritium 3-dot sights (front and rear) offer a clear, consistent sight picture in a wide range of lighting conditions. These are marked TG-H3 on both the front and rear units.
The 3.1-inch barrel and striker-fired action keep the package compact while maintaining familiar M&P controls. The pistol fires with the magazine removed (no magazine disconnect), and the included single-stack 6- and 7-round magazines support a 7+1 capacity.
Made in the United States, this is part of the original Shield series introduced in 2012. The first-generation Shield line was later discontinued following the 2021 launch of the Shield Plus, underscoring the relevance of early models like this one.
