The SA-16A2 follows the classic A2 configuration with a rifle-length gas system, a 20 inch chrome-lined barrel, and a fixed carry handle. Cosmetic rollmarks include "PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVT." and a "SAFE/SEMI/BURST" selector legend, aligning the appearance with the M16A2 pattern while maintaining semi-automatic operation.
Barrel construction is 4150 CMV steel with chrome lining, M4 feed ramps, and a pinned A2 front sight base with bayonet lug. The barrel is threaded, and the 1:7 twist supports a wide range of 5.56 NATO projectile lengths. A2 iron sights are retained, with the integral rear sight in the fixed carry handle and an A2 front sight post on the fixed base.
Receivers are forged 7075-T6 aluminum with a hardcoat anodized finish. Springfield Armory’s Accu-Tite receiver tensioning system is included to reduce play between upper and lower. The rifle uses a semi-automatic, direct-impingement operating system and an M16-pattern bolt carrier group featuring a Carpenter 158 bolt that is HPT/MPI inspected with a properly staked gas key.
Classic A2 furniture rounds out the package: a fixed stock with trapdoor buttplate and rear sling swivel, A2 pistol grip, and round ribbed two-piece handguards with aluminum heat shields. This rifle comes outfitted with a carry-handle-mounted Barska 4x20 scope and a barrel-clamp-mounted flashlight with a remote pressure switch, along with two 20-round magazines and a Springfield Armory-branded soft case.
