The T36 operates via a short-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt, delivering the G36-style layout in a U.S.-made semiautomatic configuration. The receiver is polymer and carries "MADE IN USA" and "TommyBuilt Tactical LLC, Gaithersburg, MD" markings, along with T36/Multi Cal model marking and selector pictograms (white safe, red semi).
The 16.5-inch barrel is threaded and capped with a multi-prong flash hider featuring a crenellated crown. The folding, non-reciprocating charging handle is forward-assist capable. The control set includes an ambidextrous safety/selector and a paddle-style magazine release feeding from an AR-15/STANAG-pattern magwell; capacity is 30+1 with the included PMAG.
A side-folding, skeletonized polymer stock provides a compact footprint and the rifle remains operable when folded. Length of pull measures 13.5 inches. Up front, a vented aluminum handguard integrates a bottom 1913 accessory rail for mounting the included vertical grip bipod or other accessories.
Up top, the rifle wears a TROY-marked full-length 1913 Picatinny rail for mounting sights or optics and includes a flip-up rear aperture sight. Notably, the T36 receiver designation represents an earlier Tommy Built Tactical production run that was later updated to TG36 following an ATF determination in 2020–2021.
