The Topper Model 158 is a straightforward, break-action design with an external hammer and a right-side opening side-lever. It uses a one-piece extractor for reliable shell withdrawal and holds a single round, emphasizing simplicity and dependability.
The 28-inch round steel barrel is blued, configured with a fixed full choke and a 3-inch chamber, and wears a brass front bead with no rib. This setup provides a clean sighting reference and a pattern constriction appropriate to the configuration.
The receiver and frame are steel with a color casehardened finish, complementing the blued barrel. Factory markings include the rollmark "TOPPER MODEL 158 / HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, INC. / WORC. MASS. USA" and a circled P proof/inspection mark on the barrel.
Engraving is present on the bottom side of the receiver. Hand-scribed matching assembly numbers appear on the receiver and forearm wood.
The hardwood furniture consists of an uncheckered pistol-grip stock and a slim forearm with a single through-screw. A ventilated orange H&R-logo buttpad with a white-line spacer is fitted, and the length of pull measures 13.5 inches.
This example aligns with H&R’s discontinued Topper lineage, with an AH-prefix serial format from the company’s letter-prefix system that is consistent with 1970s production. Made in the USA, it represents the practical utility the Topper series is known for.
