The Scout Squad concept shortens the barrel to 18 inches to improve maneuverability while maintaining the robust M14 operating system. To manage increased recoil impulse and muzzle flash from the shorter barrel, Springfield Armory replaced the traditional military flash hider with a proprietary, California-legal multi-port muzzle brake.
This rifle uses a semi-automatic, gas-operated short-stroke piston with a rotating bolt and a two-stage trigger—hallmarks of the M14 lineage. The receiver and barrel are carbon steel with a parkerized finish, matched to a walnut stock with sling swivels and a checkered metal buttplate. A slotted USGI-style top handguard is fitted; no forward scout rail is present in the photos.
Sighting is iron-only and purpose-built: a National Match 0.062 inch front blade teams with a GI aperture rear sight featuring MOA-click windage and elevation knobs. The 1:11 RH twist rate supports 7.62x51 NATO loads well, and the specified length of pull is 13.1 inches.
Dimensions and handling are practical for the role, with an approximate overall length of 40.33 inches and an unloaded weight of about 9 lb 3 oz. Capacity is 10+1 with the included detachable magazine.
