Bankruptcy proceedings began in October 1997, and in 1998 the company was taken over by Suhler Jagd- und Sportwaffen GmbH (later operating under the Merkel brand), with the ERMA firearms name phased out by the mid-2000s. Its defining legacy is submachine guns, with development and production work that led to the MP38/MP40.
