The HK45 was first released in 1995 as a product enhancement of the USP45. It features user-inspired enhancements such as changeable grip panels, a Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail, improved ergonomics, and more ambidextrous controls. Although the U.S. military's Joint Combat Pistol (JCP) and Combat Pistol (CP) programs, for which the HK45 was a candidate, were suspended before completion, this does not diminish the quality and performance of this firearm.
The HK45 utilizes an HK proprietary O-ring barrel for precise barrel-to-slide lockup and optimal accuracy, made using the famous HK cold-hammer forging process. Its unique internal mechanical recoil reduction system reduces recoil forces by up to 30%, improving shooter control during rapid firing and increasing component service life. The HK45 can fire standard .45 ACP ball through +P ammunition, combining the accuracy, modularity, reliability, and minimum 20,000 round service life of the USP45 series with the improved ergonomics of the P2000 series pistols.
The HK45 V1 can be fitted with threaded barrels for use with muzzle mounted sound suppressors, and features an improved USP-style control lever. This lever, a combination safety and decocking lever, is frame mounted and quickly accessible. The HK45's control lever has a positive stop and returns to the "fire" position after decocking. With the modular approach to the internal components pioneered by HK on the USP, the control lever function can be switched to accommodate left-handed shooters. For true ambidexterity, a control lever can also be mounted on both sides of the pistol.
