The FN-49 Venezuelan Contract semi-automatic rifle is a historical gem and a standout in any collection. Manufactured by Belgian arms maker FN Herstal in 1949, this battle rifle is chambered in the highly accurate 7mm Mauser (7x57mm) caliber. This particular piece is in very good condition, showing only typical signs of prior handling or use for a 1950's surplus rifle. The original walnut wood stock and metal components feature minor wear (mainly the refurbished black paint chipping off), but the bore remains in excellent condition with sharp rifling and a bright, clean finish.
This FN-49 comes with a 23.2" barrel equipped with a pinned flash hider and bayonet lug, and the rifle retains its original one-piece firing pin. The bolt carrier shows Egyptian markings, though all other components, including the bolt itself, are matching. The black paint over blued finish is worn and flaking in places, consistent with its age and history. Despite these signs of wear, the rifle’s action operates smoothly with its short stroke gas piston system.
The FN-49 was produced under eight primary contracts, with this Venezuelan variant being part of the first contract—8,003 rifles purchased by Venezuela in 1949. This version is unique for being the only one issued with a flash hider. All ~8,000 of these rifles were later sold as military surplus on the US market, making them rare and highly prized by collectors. The 7mm Mauser cartridge adds to the rifle’s desirability for both its historical significance and exceptional accuracy.
Owning an FN-49 Venezuelan Contract rifle is more than acquiring a piece of history; it’s an investment in a collectible that offers both vintage appeal and practicality. Whether you are a seasoned collector or an enthusiast of mid-20th century military firearms, this rifle stands out for its robust construction, reliable operation, and historical pedigree.
