Ruger AR-556 Free-Float Handguard 5.56 NATO – 2020 Production, Mayodan, NC
Purpose-built for shooters who want the reliability of a Ruger, the modularity of the AR-15 platform, and the accuracy advantage of a true free-float handguard, this 2020-manufactured AR-556 blends Ruger’s no-nonsense engineering with enthusiast-grade touches. A cold-hammer-forged 16" 4140 CMV barrel under a slim 13" aluminum rail keeps weight centered, while a Magpul-compatible M-LOK layout invites endless customization. Whether you’re rounding out a collection or looking for a ready-to-run carbine to outfit to your own taste, this rifle delivers the fundamentals—precision barrel, solid receiver fit, dependable carbine-length gas system—at an approachable price point.
Condition
Very good overall. The receiver set and free-float handguard show only light, superficial handling marks—no dents, gouges, or finish loss that affect function. The nitride-treated bore presents a clean, mirror finish with sharp lands and grooves and no evidence of throat erosion. Controls lock up crisp; trigger breaks at a consistent 6 lb. All factory markings are clear and intact.

From the chrome-lined carrier and gas-key interiors to the 7075-T6 Type III hard-coat receiver set, every critical component follows proven Mil-Spec benchmarks. The 1:8" twist stabilizes everything from 55-grain M193 to heavier 77-grain match loads, while the 1/2-28 threaded muzzle is ready for your choice of flash hider, muzzle brake, or suppressor. Ruger’s 13" free-float rail shrouds the low-profile gas block, giving you an uninterrupted 21" of top rail space for optics, BUIS, or night-vision bridges.
An adjustable six-position stock offers a 10.5" length of pull, letting different-sized shooters square up behind the carbine comfortably. The standard AR two-position safety selector, forward assist, and locking bolt catch keep manual of arms familiar for anyone versed in the platform. Because Ruger ships this variant optic-ready, you’re free to tailor the sighting system—LPVO, red dot, irons, or any hybrid you prefer.
Whether you’re seeking a reliable range companion, a foundation for a tailored build, or simply a modern Ruger to round out an American-made collection, this AR-556 stands ready to fit the role with minimal fuss and maximum compatibility.
