Ruger SP101 "Tame the Beast" Hybra-Port .357 Mag Revolver by Jack Weigand – Limited Custom, 2.25" 5-Shot
This compact .357 Magnum SP101 left Ruger in the mid-1990s and was immediately transformed by master gunsmith Jack Weigand into one of his scarce “Tame the Beast” Hybra-Port customs. The six-port Hybra-Port barrel, action tuning, and bead-blast matte refinish give this revolver a distinct look and performance edge that collectors recognize. With the trademark “W” on the frame and production long since discontinued, original Weigand SP101s have become sought-after pieces.

The Hybra-Port system uses six precision-cut ports near the muzzle to redirect gas upward, reducing muzzle rise and felt recoil without adding bulk. This makes rapid follow-up shots noticeably quicker while keeping the barrel length a handy 2.25 inches.
Weigand’s action tuning lightens and smooths both double- and single-action pulls, yet retains Ruger’s proven transfer-bar safety system. The trigger and hammer geometry were hand-finished, producing a crisp break and positive reset.
A bead-blast matte treatment was applied to the stainless frame, cylinder, and barrel, giving a low-glare surface that resists fingerprints and matches the revolver’s defensive role. Mild dehorning rounds sharp edges for comfortable carry.
The factory grip was replaced with a Hogue rubber Monogrip that fills the hand and tames .357 Magnum recoil. Fixed sights—serrated ramp front blade and top-strap gutter rear—offer a snag-free profile ideal for concealed carry.
Limited numbers of these Weigand “Tame the Beast” packages were produced before the program ended, enhancing both the revolver’s collectibility and real-world utility.
