Smith & Wesson SD40 VE 4" .40 S&W Striker-Fired Pistol, Satin Stainless/Black, 14+1
The SD40 VE marries Smith & Wesson’s proven SD lineage with cost-efficient manufacturing to deliver a full-size, duty-ready sidearm at an accessible price. Introduced in 2012, this second-generation design features a stainless steel slide and barrel, a black polymer frame, and the company’s Self Defense Trigger (SDT) system. Its combination of a 14-round magazine, loaded-chamber viewport, and accessory rail makes it a practical choice for defensive use or collection.

What’s Included
- Smith & Wesson SD40 VE pistol
- One 14-round stainless steel magazine
Released as a value-priced evolution of the original SD and Sigma series, the SD40 VE keeps the same 18° grip angle favored by many shooters while adding an undercut trigger guard and front finger-locator patch for consistent hand placement.
The 4" stainless barrel uses six-groove, 1:18.75 RH twist rifling and incorporates a small viewport at the rear of the hood, providing both tactile and visual confirmation of a loaded chamber.
A satin-finished stainless slide carries wide, shallow serrations front and rear, aiding manipulation without adding excess bulk. Fixed three-dot polymer sights offer a clear sight picture, and the rear unit is drift-adjustable for windage.
The black polymer frame includes a full three-slot Picatinny rail for lights or lasers. Absence of a manual safety keeps operation straightforward, relying instead on the SDT’s consistent 6.5–7.5 lb pull for safe carry.
The SD40 VE represents the last of Smith & Wesson’s SD-branded pistols before the platform transitioned to the SD 2.0 line, giving this example added appeal to brand enthusiasts.
