The Type 84S is a 5.56x45mm Norinco AKM variant built at Factory 66, identified by the triangle "66" code. It features a stamped steel receiver with a blued/black oxide finish and original Chinese wood furniture finished in orange shellac, including a fixed stock and hardwood pistol grip.
This example is a pre-ban import brought in by China Sports, Inc. (CSI) in 1988, prior to the 1989 import ban naming the Type 84S. Markings include the NORINCO five-point star logo, "84 S" model designation, "5.56x45" caliber, "MADE IN CHINA," and the importer stamp "CSI L.A. CA USA."
The 16 inch chrome-lined barrel is threaded 14x1 LH and is fitted with a removable birdcage flash hider. A bayonet lug and cleaning-rod channel are present. Sights are the classic AK pattern: a hooded front post and a tangent rear sight graduated to 800 meters.
Operation is via a gas-operated, long-stroke piston with a rotating bolt in semi-automatic. Controls include a paddle-style magazine release and a manual safety selector. The rifle uses proprietary Norinco Type 84 steel magazines for 5.56x45, and one 30-round magazine is included.
